Individual Instruction

Individual violin, viola, cello, and double bass instruction is available to children and adults of all experience levelsā€”from beginners through the most advanced levels of study. Lessons are scheduled at our Downtown, Towson, and Howard County Peabody Preparatory locations (double bass not offered in Howard County) on an individual basis and are contingent upon teacher availability. Students enrolled in individual instruction are required to have a practice instrument available.

Students needing placement for individual instruction must:

  1. Complete the registration and pay the $25 per semester registration fee indicating the intent and need to be placed
  2. Fill out thisĀ online lesson placement form. (Note: Returning students do not need to fill out this form and should contact their teacher directly regarding lesson times)

Beginners are encouraged to enroll inĀ Fiddler’s FourĀ orĀ Cello FunĀ during the fall and spring semesters, orĀ Introduction to ViolinĀ andĀ Introduction to CelloĀ over the summer. These classes include individual instruction along with group activities for beginners. Please see ourĀ Young Peopleā€™s String ProgramĀ page for more information about these classes.
Note:Ā We do not offer private violin instruction for beginners ages 5-8 over the summer.

  • Your teacher, one of the Co-Chairs, or a Coordinator will advise you with regard to appropriate classes, ensembles and programs in which to register or audition.
  • Most ages, grades, and levels are approximate.
  • Our goal is to create well-matched classes and ensembles for the educational and musical benefit of all participants, hence the difficulty of adding specific age or repertoire level labels to our offerings. The age range or level of some groups may vary slightly from year to year. Consideration for placement may include age, repertoire level, technical, musical, ensemble, performance and reading skills, fluency, attendance, emotional maturity, musical maturity, lesson preparation, and consistency of review.
  • YPSP Group classes and Camp Allegro classes are assigned by the YPSP faculty.
  • Entrance into the Pre-Conservatory Violin Program, Performance Academy for Strings, Orchestras, Chamber Music and Chamber Camp are by audition.
  • PCVP, Performance Academy (PA), YPSP, Repertoire Classes and all Peabody Preparatory recitals, competitions, and special events are open only to students who take their individual lessons at Peabody.
  • Orchestra,Ā Chamber Music for Strings/Winds/Piano, Chamber Week and Allegro Strings are open to anyone.
