Urban Arias

Date: Annually
Location: 3700 S. Four Mile Run Rd., Arlington, VA

UrbanArias periodical holds Open Call auditions. UrbanArias is a three-year-old opera company based in Arlington, VA. We produce only short (90 minutes or less) contemporary (written within the last 40 years) operas performed in English. UrbanArias’ productions receive regular superlative reviews from the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Washington CityPaper, and more.

We are looking for excellent singing actors for upcoming productions, and are particularly interested in acquainting ourselves with more DC-area talent.

ELIGIBILITY: You must live in the DC metro area, or have ready accommodations in the DC metro area if cast (commuting from Baltimore is fine, too – some of our singers and instrumentalists do that.)

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS: Please present a list of three opera arias (no art songs), at least one of which must be in English. One (but only one) musical theater piece is welcome in lieu of an aria as part of your three selections. A pianist will be provided. After your sung audition, auditionees will be grouped in threes based on time slots to do a quick spoken improv game.

WHAT YOU’RE AUDITIONING FOR: Upcoming mainstage productions at Artisphere, and mini-opera/improv shows at IOTA Club and Cafe, Atlas, and Strathmore; the latter involve improvisation, which is why we ask for it. If you’re not an experienced improv-er, don’t worry about it: just have fun. We do plenty of things that don’t involve improv, and we understand that great actors are not always great improv-ers. We’re not uptight, and you shouldn’t be either.

TO BOOK A TIME SLOT: When open calls are announced, email Robert Wood at Include your headshot and resume, three audition selections, and your availability on the announced audition days. Walk-ins will not be accepted. If you have not booked an audition time in advance through Robert Wood, you will not be heard.

LOCATION: 3700 Four Mile Run is in the Shirlington neighborhood of Arlington, not far from Signature Theater. You will be sent a room number for the audition when your time is confirmed. Parking is available in the lots around the building that are marked “3700,” and on the street. This location is not metro accessible.
