Streaming in the Dark: Where Streaming Money Goes and Why
12:30 pm – 1:30 pm Streaming in the Dark: Where Streaming Money Goes and Why Cohen-Davison Family Theatre, 1 E Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore 21202, United States The streaming market is shrouded in secrecy. It leaves musicians scrabbling for pennies—a reality that is hard to square with blockbuster industry revenues. In order for artists to benefit from the system—and for policymakers to design better, more responsive policy—we need to address both the industry’s culture of secrecy, and the powerful economic and social forces that mis-align incentives between creators, major labels, streaming services, and the consuming public. This talk answers some basic questions: What do we know? How do we know it? Where is all the money going, and–most importantly–why is it like that?
