Pre-screening

Pre-screening is only required for graduate Percussion applicants (MM, GPD, DMA, AD). For these applicants, video recordings of the following works should be submitted with your application. The four works may be captured and uploaded as separate video files, but each should be from a single camera and angle, performed in one take without edits.

Snare

  • Etude No. 1 from Delecluse’s Douze Etudes

Timpani

  • Beethoven Symphony No. 9, mvt 1 coda

Keyboard

  • Two-mallet transcription for marimba of any movement of a work by J.S. Bach
  • 5-10 minutes of a 4-mallet contemporary solo work for marimba or vibraphone (excerpts or movements from a larger work are acceptable to fit the time requirement)
    • Suggested repertoire:
      • Druckman – Reflections on the Nature of Water
      • Etezady – Boomslang
      • Klatzow  – Dances of Earth and Fire
      • Lansky – Three Moves
      • Mackey  – See Ya Thursday
      • Miki – Time for marimba
      • Seo – V, 12 Preludes for marimba

      • Viñao  – Khan Variations

Live Audition Requirements

Undergraduate

Snare Drum

  • One etude from either Cirone’s Portraits in Rhythm or Delecluse’s Douze Etudes
  • One etude by Pratt, Wilcoxon, or similar

Timpani

  • Etude of candidate’s choice from Richard Hochrainer Etuden Fur Timpani
  • Candidate will be expected to demonstrate fluency of tuning, and recognize and sing intervals played on the piano

Keyboard

  • Two-mallet transcription for marimba of any movement of a work by J.S. Bach
  • Four-mallet solo (approximately 5-12 minutes in length)
    • Suggested repertoire:
      • Abe – Dream of the Cherry Blossoms, Wind in the Bamboo Grove, Variations on Japanese Children’s Songs>
      • Miyake – Chain
      • Sammut – Rotations, Cameleon
      • Stout – Mexican Dances, Astral Dance
      • Tanaka – Two Movements for Marimba
  • Two-mallet sight-reading will be required

Excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire for timpani, snare drum, and xylophone are suggested but not required.

Graduate (MM, GPD, DMA)

Snare drum

  • One etude from either Cirone’s Portraits in Rhythm or Delecluse’s Douze Etudes
  • Two excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire

Timpani

  • One solo from Elliott Carter’s Eight Pieces for Four Timpani
  • Two excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire
  •  Candidate will be expected to demonstrate fluency of tuning, and recognize and sing intervals played on the piano

Keyboard

  • A major work for either marimba or vibraphone (see suggested repertoire in the pre-screening requirements above)
  • Two-mallet transcription for marimba of any movement of a work by J.S. Bach
  • Sight reading will be required

Multiple-percussion

  • A solo piece for multiple percussion (7-15 min duration)
  • This solo should be submitted as a recording to the Portfolio section of your application status page by February 1st. This piece will not be performed live at the audition.

Xylophone

  • Two excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire

Artist Diploma

Artist Diploma applicants must prepare a program of no less than 70 minutes duration in line with what the candidate would offer for a professional solo recital.
