Pre-screening
There is no pre-screening requirement for Percussion.
Undergraduate
Marimba
- Four-mallet solo (approximately 5-12 minutes in length)
- Two-mallet transcription of any movement of a cello suite or violin partita or sonata by J.S. Bach
- Two-mallet sight reading will be required
Snare Drum
- One etude from either Cirone’s Portraits in Rhythm or Delecluse’s Douze Etudes
- One etude by Pratt, Wilcoxon, or similar
Timpani
- Etude of candidate’s choice from any of the following: Richard Hochrainer Etuden Fur Timpani, Jacques Delecluse Vingt Etudes, or Vic Firth The Solo Timapnist
- Candidate will be expected to demonstrate fluency of tuning, and recognize and sing intervals played on the piano
Excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire for timpani, snare drum, and xylophone are suggested but not required.
Graduate (MM, GPD, DMA)
Marimba
- A major work for either marimba or vibraphone
- A movement from a cello suite or violin sonata or partita by J.S. Bach
- Sight reading will be required
Multiple-percussion
- A solo piece for multiple percussion (7-15 min duration)
- This solo should be submitted as a recording to the Portfolio section of you application status page by February 1st. This piece will not be performed live at the audition.
Snare drum
- One etude from either Cirone’s Portraits in Rhythm or Delecluse’s Douze Etudes
- Two excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire
Timpani
- One solo from Elliott Carter’s Eight Pieces for Four Timpani.
- Two excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire
- Candidate will be expected to demonstrate fluency of tuning, and recognize and sing intervals played on the piano
Xylophone
- Two excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire
Artist Diploma
Artist Diploma applicants must prepare a program of no less than 70 minutes duration in line with what the candidate would offer for a professional solo recital.
