Pianist Hyun-Sook Park earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where she studied with Ellen Mack. Born in Seoul, Korea, she began piano studies at the age of five. After completing her early training at the Yewon School of Music, she immigrated to the United States with her family and continued her education at Peabody, earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees before completing the doctorate.
During her student years, Park distinguished herself in both performance and academic achievement. In her sophomore year in the undergraduate study, she won the Peabody Mozart Piano Concerto Competition and appeared as soloist with the Peabody Symphony Orchestra. She also served as coordinator of the Conservatory’s accompanying programs while a graduate teaching assistant. Her honors include the Presser Foundation Scholarship, the Lillian Gutman Memorial Prize, the Annie Wentz Scholarship, and the Rose Marie Milholland Award in Piano. She was additionally recognized with a Korean Honor Scholarship from the Korean Embassy in Washington, D.C. and is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda.
Park is a long-standing member of the Peabody faculty, teaching both at the Conservatory and the Preparatory. At the Preparatory, she serves on the piano faculty and co-directs the Peabody Piano Academy. In recognition of her teaching, she received the Preparatory’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010. At the Conservatory, she is Program Lead and Developer for Peabody Outreach for Piano Pedagogy, an initiative that provides Conservatory students with teaching experience while serving Baltimore City students. She is also a member of the Conservatory’s piano pedagogy faculty.
As a performer, Park collaborates frequently with her sister, soprano Hyunah Yu. Together they have appeared in major venues including Carnegie Hall’s Evenings of Song series, Shriver Hall Concert Series, the Brattleboro Music Center, and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. She has also performed in the Chamber Concert Series at Peabody’s Friedberg Concert Hall.
