For individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited institution and are seeking to become certified to teach music, Peabody offers a non-degree Certification Program. Students may enroll full-time or part-time in this 25-31 credit program, which can be completed with two in-person semesters on campus and one semester of intern teaching in the schools.

To apply, please complete our non-degree-seeking application here.

The non-degree application and an interview with faculty are required for admission.

To become certified by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to teach in the public schools in Maryland, candidates must pass the Praxis I or have an SAT score of 1000 prior to 1995 or 1100 after 1995 before enrolling (writing score not included). A competency can also be displayed by a GRE score of 1000 or ACT of 24.

Peabody reserves the right to require additional credits beyond the minimum requirements in order for the candidate to qualify for intern teaching. Peabody also may ask that the candidate complete the Praxis before starting coursework. Special tuition rates apply.
