Overview

As with any urban campus, security is an important concern for every member of the Peabody community. The Campus Security Office provides a full range of security services to the campus community 24 hours a day. Guided by its community-based philosophy, the department maintains a dedicated staff, some of whom are commissioned police officers with full arrest powers. Campus Security is charged with the responsibility of reporting, investigating, and taking action on crimes that are committed on campus, maintaining campus security and order, responding to medical emergencies, reporting safety hazards and maintenance problems, and reporting and/or taking action on violations of school policies. Campus Security also assists authorized individuals with gaining access to locked rooms. A number of closed circuit cameras around the perimeter of the Peabody Institute record activities for security and safety purposes.

Campus Access

When an entrance to the campus is opened for any length of time, Campus Security personnel will be stationed at the door to monitor people entering campus and to check IDs. At all other times, the doors are kept locked to prevent unauthorized access. Each outside entrance point, except for the main entrance, has an intercom box located next to the card reader and is monitored by camera. The intercom may be used to contact the Campus Security desk officer. To operate the intercom, just push the call button on the box. There is no need to hold the button in for any length of time.

Only persons possessing an active Peabody/JHU ID card will be able to enter the campus by using the card-key access system. All others must use the main entrance located at 17 East Mount Vernon Place. Please do not allow unknown persons entrance to campus, either by holding open a door or by allowing them to follow you (piggyback) when you enter. Please refer them to the main entrance. All student ID cards are de-activated the day after commencement in May. Students may have their ID cards re-activated for the summer at the Campus Security Office, provided they have pre-registered for the following semester.

Campus Security Alerts and Advisories

Crime alerts and advisories are generated and posted when Campus Security or Baltimore Police receive reports of crimes considered to be a threat to the community. These alerts and advisories are posted on the Campus Security website and on crime prevention bulletin boards. A broadcast email may also be disseminated. These bulletin boards are used to post crime bulletins, crime prevention tips, and other relevant information.

For additional information, contact Campus Security at 667-208-6608 or refer to the Annual Security Report, which is available to all campus community members and guests on the Campus Security website at https://security.jhu.edu/_template-assets/documents/annual_report.pdf.

Blue Jay Shuttle Service

The Johns Hopkins Peabody Blue Jay Shuttle service is available to transport to and from campus all members of the Peabody community who live within its approximately one square mile operating radius. Transportation is available during the academic year from 6:00 pm to 2:00 am.

Riders may request shuttle pick-ups through the TransLoc app, available for both Apple and Android mobile devices, or by calling Transportation Services at (410) 516-8700. The shuttle picks up and discharges passengers at the Peabody Mews entrance on Charles St.

In the event of an emergency, the Office of Student Affairs and Campus Security can arrange for transportation via emergency transport vehicles.

Lost and Found

The Campus Security Office coordinates the school’s lost and found service, so all community members are asked to turn any lost items into the office. For those who are missing something, check with Campus Security first. Found property is disposed of after 90 days.

Reporting Criminal Action and Emergencies

Any student who is a victim of a crime are asked to report it. If the crime has occurred on campus, near campus, or while en-route to campus, community members should report it to Campus Security. Sometimes a pattern of criminal activity can be identified and others can avoid becoming victims if Campus Security knows about incidents as they happen. Campus Security can help file a report with the Baltimore Police, if necessary.

If a wallet is stolen, cancel all credit cards immediately. If one of the stolen items was a bank card, call the bank and cancel access to bank accounts through that card. Under no circumstances should a bank card access number be shared over the telephone (legitimate bank officials never ask to verify card access number in this manner).

If keys are stolen with personally identifiable information, those locks should be changed. Lost student ID/access cards should be reported to Campus Security immediately. Not only will the card be replaced, but the officers will also be on alert to catch the individual trying to use it for access to campus.

Report strange persons or suspicious activity to Campus Security immediately. Personal diligence helps Peabody maintain a safe environment, particularly by reporting any safety hazards that might be observed.

Residence Hall Security

Campus Security patrols the public areas on each floor of the residence hall and Peabody Living Center periodically during the day. Residents should be aware of steps they can take to keep their living area safe and secure.

  1. When a room is unoccupied, no matter for how brief a period, the door should be locked.
  2. Residents should immediately report suspicious persons or people they do not recognize to a resident assistant, Campus Security officer, or the Residence Life or Student Affairs staff.
  3. Record make, model, serial number, and any other identifying information of your valuable possessions. Put a copy of this information in a safe place (i.e. with parents, safety deposit box, etc.).
  4. Students should consider protecting their possessions, especially expensive instruments, jewelry, and electronic equipment, with insurance. In some cases, parents’ homeowner’s insurance will cover the student’s property. Campus Security can engrave your personal property with identifying information free of charge.
