Pre-screening

There is no pre-screening requirement for Viola.

Undergraduate (BM)

  • Two contrasting movements of unaccompanied Bach. Please omit repeats in the dance movements.
  • One movement from a standard sonata (Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Shostakovich) or a comparable work
  • One movement from the Bartok, Walton, or Hindemith concertos or a virtuoso movement from a standard classical concerto

Graduate (MM, GPD, DMA)

The graduate repertoire in viola is patterned after a typical undergraduate senior (MM, GPD) or graduate (DMA) recital. In order to provide some latitude, the requirements are not dictated. However, you must prepare sufficient material to perform a full solo recital containing works which show a diversity of periods and styles.

Artist Diploma

AD applicants must prepare a program of no less than 70 minutes duration, representing at least three style periods and including at least two large-scale works.
