Stephen Stone attended Oberlin College, earning a BA in music and chemistry. Stone went on to earn an MS and PhD in physical chemistry from Cornell University, followed by an MM and DMA in music composition from the Peabody Institute. Stone studied composition with Christopher Theofanidis, Thomas Benjamin, Nicholas Maw, Morris Cotel. Previously, Stone served as a former adjunct faculty at Towson University.

Stone also serves as director of Peabody at Homewood at the Johns Hopkins University’s Krieger School. In this role, Stone has developed eight new courses to broaden the program’s appeal to diverse interests of Johns Hopkins students and has also organized numerous concerts at the Homewood campus. From 2009-13,  Stone served as the Faculty Assembly chair, acting as liaison between faculty and administration. He also spent four years as faculty advisor for the Junior Bach Program, a community outreach program in which composition majors gave one-on-one lessons to students from the St. Ignatius Loyola Academy.

Stone continues to give lectures, master classes, and performances throughout the state of Maryland.
