Description
The Arts in Health Internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital is a competitive, paid program that trains Peabody Conservatory student leaders in the development and delivery of arts in health programming. Arts in Health interns work approximately 6-8 hours a week and receive ongoing training in topics of arts in health specific to their areas of personal and professional interest, such as leadership, community engagement, and the integration of arts programming into healthcare settings. Interns may also attend bi-monthly Artist Rounds meetings and learn from guest artists, industry professionals, and specialists. Arts in Health Interns are hired each spring for the following academic year. The rate of compensation is $15/hour.
Three internship positions are open for the 2025-26 academic year:
Program Administration Intern: This internship supports the delivery of the Music for a While program by assisting with weekly performances by Peabody students in the public spaces of Johns Hopkins Hospital. The intern gains skills in program administration to support the full life cycle of an arts in health program through:
- Assisting with scheduling student performances in the fall and spring semesters within the Johns Hopkins Hospital campus in East Baltimore
- Coordinating the scheduling of bi-weekly artist rounds for students and guest speakers
- Monitoring student shift reports and prepare reports for the AIH team as requested
- Monitoring staff and patient feedback and prepare reports for the AIH team as requested
- Preparing program information for hospital marketing and communications
- Inventorying materials (badge hangtags, chairs, music stands, signage, etc.) and ensure that pianos and other equipment are in good condition; assist with ordering new supplies as needed
- Communicating with Johns Hopkins Hospital Volunteer Services department to ensure students complete all required trainings and medical tests on a yearly basis
- Updating policies and procedures documents as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Inspired Aging Intern: This internship supports Peabody student musicians who perform and/or deliver workshops in our elder-facing community programs, including Peabody’s Musicians in Residence and Arts in Health Performers who serve the senior population. The intern gains mentorship experience and skills in program administration via supporting the full life cycle of a community-facing arts in health program. Duties may include:
- Working closely with the Office of Arts in Health in researching and cultivating new partnerships as well as supporting and growing existing partnerships
- Researching and developing engaging artistic activities for a variety of senior audiences including classes, presentations, creative composition and interactive performances
- Assisting in the delivery of programs specifically crafted for and requested by Inspired Aging partner communities
- Executing administrative tasks including communications, program evaluation and assessment, reporting and documentation
- Being an on-the-ground touchpoint and mentor for Peabody musicians serving the aging community, and serving as a liaison between the AIH Program Manager, Musicians in Residence, AIH performers, and staff/stakeholders at service sites
- Attending and assisting with the organization of check-ins with AIH performers, Grand Rounds meetings, and occasional visits from guest artists, industry professionals and specialists
- Participating in national meetings including the Collegiate Music Outreach Network Creative Aging Student Subcommittee
- Assisting with the recruitment and selection process for future Inspired Aging Interns
- Being available as needed as a spokesperson for the Inspired Aging Intern program through info sessions, internal Peabody communication, etc.
- Updating policies and procedures documents as needed
- Performing for occasional events in served communities
- Other duties as assigned
Concert Curation Intern: This internship supports the curation of a series of concerts for the Johns Hopkins Hospital community in partnership with the Program Coordinator for Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Program in Arts, Humanities, & Health (PAHH) through:
- Serving as liaison between performers and PAHH
- Assisting with curation/production to develop context-specific concert proposals, works with AIH Team, LAUNCHPad, and faculty to identify appropriate artists/ensembles, coordinates artist/program materials, artist transportation, and communication with artists
- Attending all performances and supports as needed on day-of
- Submitting payment requests to AIH Program Manager
Eligibility and Requirements
- Enrollment as a graduate student (DMA preferred) in good academic standing
- Demonstrated artistic excellence in community/healthcare work, through video/audio clips or live audition
- High level of responsibility, good communication skills, and ability to collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and community partners
- Completion of all required hospital orientation sessions, healthcare screenings, and background check, as needed for on-site hospital work
- Willingness to abide by all regulations required of those working within the healthcare environment and to put safety above all other considerations
- Experience playing in a variety of contexts and in a broad range of repertoire/styles
- Understanding of how to use music to engage people in a variety of community contexts
- Utilization of best practices in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
- Flexibility, patience, and ability to take direction in a rapidly changing environment
- A sincere interest in learning about the impact of the arts on health outcomes
