The Misbin New Directions String Ensemble is an initiative funded by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine alumni, Robert Misbin. This initiative works to build a community of string-centered ensembles that explore the rich musical traditions of African American and Latinx cultures, provide a safe space for students to explore their own voices, and give students the facility to improvise and collectively compose as individuals and as an ensemble. This ensemble is accompanied by a suite of group classes and sectionals that work to reinforce the concepts and content from the ensemble while developing a fundamental grounding in string playing technique, improvisation, and extended instrumental techniques.
