Joseph Young, Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg Artistic Director of Ensembles, Conductor
Kevin Puts: Virelai
Bedřich Smetana: Má Vlast, No. 2: “Vltava” (“River Moldau”)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6, Op. 74 (Pathétique)
Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg Artistic Director of Ensembles Joseph Young pairs two exquisite short works with one of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s mature masterpieces for the first orchestral concert of Peabody’s 2025-26 concert season. Young leads the Peabody Concert Orchestra through faculty composer Kevin Puts’ Virelai, inspired by Guillaume de Machaut, and Czech composer Bedřich Smetana’s Vltava (“River Moldau”) from Má Vlast, the gorgeous tone poem about Smetana’s homeland. The program concludes with Tchaikovsky’s arresting and turbulent Symphony No. 6, a defining work of the Romantic era.
