Randall Scarlata & Gilbert Kalish: Die schöne Müllerin

Randall Scarlata & Gilbert Kalish: Die schöne Müllerin

Franz Schubert wrote more than 1,500 works in the brief 31 years the Austrian composer blazed through the early 19th century, leaving behind an expansive body of work, including seminal song cycles that remain stirring concert hall experiences. Celebrated pianist Gilbert Kalish and faculty artist Randall Scarlata have collaboratively explored Schubert’s melancholic Winterreise and the posthumously-published Schwanengesang in concerts for more than a decade, and their 2018 recording of the former earned the pair a 2019 Best Solo Vocal Recording, Classical Grammy nomination. Kalish and Scarlata are currently performing Schubert’s beautiful first song cycle, Die schöne Müllerin, a 24-song narrative setting of Wilhelm Müller’s poems that charts the obsessive love of a lowly craftsman for a miller’s daughter, and they plan to record the hour-long cycle later this fall.
