This performance is dedicated to dedicated to Iranian women and features composer Aida Shirazi’s “Portrait” and “Soliloquy of the unnamed” for solo voice and violin and the world premiere of “Woman, Life, Freedom,” a multi-movement piece for solo violin and SSAA choir by composers Jane Kozhevnikova, Bahar Royaee, Sarah Rimkus, Anna Pidgorna, and soloist Negar Afazel, a current DMA student of Vadim Gluzman. “Women, Life, Freedom” was funded by Afazel’s 2023 Presser Foundation award to set the poetry of four women Persian poets from the 18th to the 21st centuries. For the performance, Afazel will perform one of the movements on an instrument from the Violins of Hope collection of string instruments owned by Jews before or during World War II, and she dedicates the performance to all women who are suffering under oppression, war, and injustice.
