Johann Strauss: Die Fledermaus

Though Die Fledermaus debuted in 1874 Vienna, composer Johann Strauss II and librettists Karl Haffner and Richard Genée’s operetta didn’t become one of the genre’s more beloved entertainments until the 20th century. It follows a group of swells moving through jealousy, mistaken identities, flirtation, and infidelity at a posh party over three acts, and this practically screwball comedy is accompanied by some of the more mellifluous melodies of opera’s Romantic era. Peabody Opera Theatre’s production, helmed by Managing Artistic Director Mary Duncan with Music Director Laurie Rogers leading the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in the pit, is sung in German with English supertitles and dialogue.
