Since 2015, the Peabody Institute and Johns Hopkins Medicine have partnered to deliver arts in healthcare programs for patients, families, and healthcare providers. Students and professional musicians offer a wide range of artistic experiences to promote wellness, provide respite, and enhance the healthcare environment through the arts. Peabody offers training, professional development opportunities, and peer mentorship for participating artists.
Extensive research into best practices in arts in health have resulted in two Peabody-led publications to support the training of Arts in Healthcare practitioners:
The Music for a While program offers informal music performances by Peabody students in the public spaces of Johns Hopkins Hospital. The program offers musicians the opportunity to bring their artistry to the healthcare environment and develop the context-specific skillset needed to contribute to well-being and healing.
Sound Rounds
Peabody’s Sound Rounds program brings professional musicians to patients’ bedsides to provide comfort and companionship through music. Sound Rounds musicians have worked bedside at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in East Baltimore since 2018, when the program began as a partnership between the Peabody Institute and the Johns Hopkins Hospital Patient and Family Advisory Councils. Bedside musical services are delivered through in-person visits on hospital units and impromptu performances in hallways and waiting areas.
Arts in Health Performances
Peabody provides concert services to partners at Johns Hopkins Hospital and other healthcare facilities. Peabody performers have been featured in lunchtime concert series and hospital events coordinated by Spiritual Care Services and the Office of Well-Being, among others.
Are you interested in bringing Peabody artists to your healthcare facility? Our artists are available to provide performance opportunities for patients, guests, and healthcare staff. Arts in Health Internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital
