Catrin Davies, stage director, acting teacher, and mezzo-soprano, has been an opera professional since 2001. Born in Washington, DC, and possessing British citizenship, Davies has lived, performed, and directed in the United States, Canada, and the UK.
Currently, Davies is the Artistic Director of the Young Victorian Theatre Company. Upcoming productions include The Gondoliers for Young Vic, and Faust for Opera Baltimore (formerly Baltimore Concert Opera.) Most recently, Davies directed The Turn of the Screw, The Pirates of Penzance, and Adriana Lecouvreur. She is a regular director with Bel Cantanti, directing Rigoletto and their film of Hansel and Gretel. She was also the resident director at Summer Garden Opera, directing Faust, Il barbiere di Siviglia, and La Traviata. Other directing highlights include: Lyric Opera Baltimore, Live Arts Maryland, and Opera Delaware. She is committed to performing both old and new repertoire, directing the premiere Bandera’s Of Church and State, and assistant directing the premiere of Bornfield’s Camelot Requiem. A passionate believer in educational opera as an agent of change, Davies has performed children’s operas for over 20 years, and directed various productions over the past decade. Formative to her training was being a part of the inaugural class of the Directors’ Studio at the Shakespeare Theatre Company under the mentorship of Michael Kahn.
In academic realm, she has been an adjunct professor at Towson University and Harford Community College, and a lecturer with Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel). Davies holds an honors degree in history from McGill University, a Master’s degree in Women’s Studies from Oxford University, and graduate diplomas from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and the Peabody Conservatory.
