Immerse yourself in a week of classical guitar mastery at the Peabody Summer Guitar Institute, a vibrant celebration of the instrument. Join a world-class faculty of renowned performers and educators dedicated to guiding guitarists of all ages. 

Whether you’re an aspiring artist, a dedicated teen, an adult enthusiast, or a young musician, the Institute offers a dynamic program tailored to your musical goals. Engage in intensive learning, refine your technique in daily boot camps, receive personalized guidance in private lessons, expand your musical horizons through workshops and masterclasses, and participate in invaluable performance opportunities. Our Youth Track, for young musicians, offers a fun and engaging exploration of music and the guitar, designed to spark a lifelong passion. 

World-Renowned Faculty

Learn from Peabody Conservatory’s esteemed faculty members Manuel Barrueco and Franco Platino, international guest artists Meng Su, João Luiz, and Junhong Kuang, and Summer Guitar Institute faculty artists Sean Brennan, Thomas Creek, Mark Edwards, Scott Gossage, Zoë Johnstone Stewart, James Keretses, Leonard Ranallo, and Matthew Slotkin. 

Program Highlights

  • Daily Instruction: Engage in intensive learning sessions each day starting at 9:00 am, and attend inspiring performances by internationally renowned guest artists each evening. 
  • Technique Boot Camp: Refine your fundamental skills with daily sessions led by Conservatory faculty artist Franco Platino. 
  • Private Lessons: Receive personalized guidance from our expert instructors. 
  • Workshops: Explore diverse topics, including guitar history, improvisation, Brazilian guitar music, and more. 
  • Ensemble Experience: Develop your collaborative skills through small ensembles and the grand experience of performing in a large guitar orchestra. 
  • Performance Opportunities: Showcase your progress in a culminating student concert. Our Youth Track participants will also showcase their skills in a community concert. 
  • Inspiring Evening Concerts (7:00 pm): Featuring internationally renowned artists Meng Su, João Luiz, and Junhong Kuang, as well as a faculty concert. 

Tracks Tailored to Your Needs

  • Aspiring Artists (12-Adult): Prepare for advanced study or conservatory auditions with intensive training and direct interaction with Peabody Conservatory faculty. Submit a 10-minute video showcasing two contrasting styles for placement in ensembles and masterclasses (limited spots). Contact Franco Platino with questions. 
  • Teens (12-18): Refine your technique, explore advanced repertoire, and gain valuable performance experience. Submit a 10-minute video showcasing two contrasting styles for placement. Contact Zoë Johnstone Stewart with questions. 
  • Adult Enthusiasts: Connect with fellow guitarists, learn from renowned instructors, and deepen your musical journey. Submission of a 10-minute video showcasing two contrasting styles is optional for placement. Contact Zoë Johnstone Stewart with questions. 
  • Youth: Develop foundational skills and ignite your passion for music through fun and engaging activities. Contact James Keretses with questions. 

Tuition

  • Commuter: $1135 – includes tuition ($950) and 3 meals/day ($185); registration fee of $25* waived until April 1.
  • Resident: $1460 – includes tuition ($950), 3 meals/day ($185) and 5 nights accommodations in Peabody Conservatory student housing ($325); registration fee of $25* waived until April 1. Limited single rooms available; most students will have a roommate.

*A $25 registration fee is not included in the overall tuition rate.

Important Note: All students 12 and older must upload a playing sample video and scores for placement, as part of their registration. Adult enthusiasts may opt out, if preferred. Students 11 and younger do not need to submit a playing sample.

Peabody Conservatory Faculty

Manuel Barrueco

Legendary guitarist Manuel Barrueco is internationally recognized as one of the most important guitarists of our time. Hailed as a “major artist with a remarkable musicianship and a word of technique” by the Los Angeles Times and as a “superior musician” by the New York Times, his unique artistry has been continually described as that of a elegant and intelligent musician, possessing a seductive sound and uncommon lyrical gifts.

Franco Platino

Winner of the Naxos Recording Prize at the Guitar Foundation of America International Competition, Franco Platino’s debut recording, “Guitar Recital,” received rave reviews by music magazines worldwide. The American Record Guide described him as “an extremely expressive player, his virtuosity is apparent but never pushed“ and the prestigious Gramophone magazine wrote: “This is one of the finest records of guitar playing I have encountered in many years. It is of star quality in every respect”.

Guest Artists

Junhong Kuang

As one of the most influential young musicians today, guitarist Junhong Kuang was selected as one of the ‘30 Brilliant Classical Musicians Under 30 ' by conductor Julian Lloyd Webber. He has worked with many conductors including Darrell Ang, Michael Francis, Tonu Kaljuste, Kevin Griffiths, Jed Gaylin, Nell Flanders, Chen Xieyang, Chen Lin, Yin Jiongjie Hu Yongyan, Zhu Qiyuan, Fu Renchang, and shared the stage with musicians: Manuel Barrueco, David Russell, Pepe Romero, Lv Siqing, Mei Diyang (Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Principal Viola), and Zeng Yun (Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Principal French Horn). He also works closely with composers Gerald Garcia and Wen Ziyang. In 2017, Kuang was awarded the top prize in the classical guitar category of the prestigious ARD Music Competition, along with the Audience Prize and the Ifp-Musikpreis, making him the youngest prizewinner in ARD’s history.

João Luiz

Two time Latin Grammy nominee guitarist, educator, and composer João Luiz, began to play the popular music of his native Brazil professionally during his childhood and was later trained in classical guitar by his mentor Henrique Pinto. Winner of the 2006 Concert Artists Guild Competition as a member of the critically acclaimed Brasil Guitar Duo, João has performed extensively in the United States, Asia, Europe and Latin America. As a performer and composer João is equally at home with classical, Brazilian and world music; his solo guitar, chamber music, and concerto repertoire covers all the main works in the guitar literature from Dowland to Berio and Brazilian rhythms from choro to baião.

Meng Su

Multifaceted guitarist Meng Su is captivating audiences around the world with her stunning virtuosity and refined artistry. New York Concert Review called her performance “seemingly effortless and stunningly polished…. Add to that a beautiful – and fashionable! – stage presence, and she is poised to be in high demand” while Classical Guitar Magazine wrote that “she has already reached the status of a seasoned artist.”
