The cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach occupy a significant position within his compositional output. This course examines major works in this genre and offers students an opportunity to explore Bach’s life as a working musician. Students will also gain exposure to the history of Bach research, 18th-century music topics, and performance practice issues.
This is a two-semester course in the basic principles of musical construction as seen through examination of representative compositions from the Renaissance to the present. Enrollment is limited to 15 students. *For students who have already taken and passed the first semester of Principles of Analysis in a previous Summer Session, Dr. Falby will assign coursework sufficient to satisfy the requirements for the second level, PY.710.618.
