Performance | In lieu of a performance this year, the winners of the 2020 Concerto Competitions, at the discretion of the conductor, will be invited back for a performance during the 2021-2022 season. |
Competition | Sunday, January 23, 2021, 11:00 am-2:00 pm, Virtual |
Deadline to Enter | Sunday, November 15, 2020 by 11:59pm |
Performing as a soloist with a large ensemble is an experience like no other. As such, the Wind Orchestra Competition allows woodwind, brass and percussion students the opportunity to learn advanced repertoire for the chance to perform as soloists with the Preparatory Wind Orchestra. The effort and focus it takes to create a winning performance will serve students well regardless of a student’s future in music.
New Rules for 2020-2021: Peabody Wind Orchestra will be conducting a virtual live competition on Saturday, January 23. Students must sign up electronically by November 15 at 11:59 pm.
In addition to a live virtual competition, students will be asked to video-record on a secondary device their audition as it occurs, upload it to YouTube as an ‘Unlisted’ video, and submit the hyperlink using a form that will be provided once entering the competition. This is in the event that connectivity issues occur, in which case the secondary recorded backup of the audition can be used as a reference tool for judges to assure auditions run as successfully as possible and are adjudicated fairly for each student.
In lieu of a performance this year, the winners of the 2020 Concerto Competitions, at the discretion of the conductor, be invited back for a performance during the 2021-2022 season.
Rules highlighted in red below have changed for the 2020-2021 academic year only.
1. Open to Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion students who are currently enrolled in a large ensemble or taking private lessons at the Peabody Preparatory. If you are not enrolled in private lessons, you must have finished an entire year in a Peabody large ensemble to be eligible.
2. In lieu of a performance this year, the winners of the 2020 Concerto Competitions, at the discretion of the conductor, be invited back for a performance during the 21-22 season.
3. Previous winners of the Wind Orchestra Competition are prohibited from entering the following year. Winners may enter other Peabody competitions.
4. If a student enters as part of a double concerto, he/she may not also enter as an individual.
5. Pieces for solo instrument and piano are eligible for the competition. If possible, the winner’s piece will be arranged for Wind Orchestra or another piece will be selected.
6. Single movements of multi-movement works are permissible.
7. Prior to entering, students should confirm repertoire with the conductor.
8. Orchestral transcriptions may be entered at the discretion of the conductor.
9. Performers may use music for the competition, but the winner is expected to perform the concert from memory.
10. No accompanists should be used for the 2020-2021 competition.
A panel of judges will determine one winner for each competition. The conductors, in consultation with the Executive Director, reserve the right not to include the concerto on a concert program. At the discretion of the conductor, the orchestra may read the concerto with the winner during a rehearsal if it is not programmed on a concert.
The following is a list of possible competition repertoire that has been written for band. All orchestral and solo w/piano repertoire is acceptable for the competition. Repertoire from the baroque period or with string only accompaniment are allowed, however a winner with this repertoire will most likely be asked to perform a different piece on the concert.
