Greg Hays is a guitarist and educator currently residing in Baltimore, Maryland. Growing up just north of the city, Greg was exposed early on to the rich and diverse music scene of the area. He began learning the guitar at age seven and has played his way into many different genres and groups such as rock bands, blues trios, jazz combos, and chamber ensembles.
As a performer, Greg has co-founded two guitar duos: EastWest Guitar Duo and, most recently, the Un/Strung Guitar Duo. He regularly performs with these groups in a variety of venues throughout the tristate area. Greg frequently arranges and composes new works for guitar, and his composition, “Four Colors” for solo guitar was awarded as a finalist in the 2019 SMP Press Contemporary Music Composition.
Greg maintains a guitar studio teaching many different styles to a wide array of ages. He creates personalized exercises and study songs to help his students achieve their own artistic voice and highest potential. Appearing in a WUSA9 interview, Greg discusses the importance of healthy practice habits and his involvement with the SmartGuitar at Johns Hopkins. In addition to performing, Greg has extensive experience in audio production.
Greg holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from Frostburg State University and a Master of Music degree in Guitar Performance and Pedagogy from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University under the instruction of Julian Gray.
