All players of orchestral instruments enrolled in the BM, MM, PC, and GPD degree programs will be automatically registered for the Large Ensemble course. The ensembles comprising this course include the Peabody Symphony Orchestra (PSO), Peabody Chamber Orchestra (PCO), Peabody Modern Orchestra (PMO), Peabody Wind Ensemble (PWE), Peabody Opera Theatre Orchestra (POTO), and Peabody Studio Orchestra (PST). Students will not be assigned to any one particular ensemble, but will instead rotate through a variety of different ensemble configurations throughout the academic year. Assignments to individual programs will be made by the Artistic Director of Ensembles in consultation with the ensemble managers and studio faculty, and are based upon the instrumental requirements of the repertoire, each student’s placement audition ratings, and the intent to provide all students with a broad range of ensemble experiences. The instrumental auditions are eight minutes in length, and consist of the required excerpts provided below, plus a solo work usually of the student’s own choosing. They are heard by a panel which includes the Artistic Director of Ensembles, ensemble conductors, and instrumental studio faculty.
Instruments are heard on specific days and times according to the master schedule for placement auditions. Students should arrive at the check-in table located in the grand arcade at least 15 minutes before their scheduled audition time, in order to fill out paperwork and be photographed. Joe Byrd Hall will be available for warm-ups.

All auditioning students must submit their Large Ensemble Placement Audition Information Form electronically, well in advance of their audition dates. This will enable us to gather the data we need sooner and more accurately, and provide it to the placement audition panelists and Ensemble Office staff in a more efficient manner. Once you have decided on your solo piece, please click on the link below, fill out the form, and submit it. You should do this only once, as you will not be able to go back and edit your information once the form has been submitted. If you are a foreign student who does not yet have a U.S. cell phone number, please leave that question unanswered — you can give us your new number later. If you have any questions or you need to correct any information already submitted, please email Harry Oehler in the Ensemble Office.
PDFs of the required excerpts for the 2019-2020 academic year are posted below and may be downloaded and printed for use in preparing for ensemble placement auditions. It is recommended that the latest version of Adobe Reader be used to view and print the documents, which is available as a free download from get.adobe.com/reader/. Be sure and use your printer’s “fit to page” option when printing to standard letter-size paper.
