Steve Yankee began studying music and playing guitar at the age of 9 and began playing rock and roll in junior high. He later focused solely on jazz, studying at the with Charles Postlewate and Joe Fava at Wayne State University. For the past 40 years he has been teaching both privately and at schools such as the University of Michigan, Flint Institute of Music, and Baltimore School for the Arts. Yankee currently teaches at Goucher College and the Peabody Institute. He has lived in Baltimore for the last 32 years, playing regularly in jazz clubs around Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. His goal is to make a complete musician out of himself and his students, encouraging his students to really know music as well as their musical instrument. His students will learn how to play solo guitar as well as know their role and function in an ensemble setting. He will teach them how to learn as well. He has an exercise for every problem and a lesson for every approach. Though he mainly engages students on guitar, he will take students on electric bass as well.
