A Bachelor of Music degree or the equivalent from an accredited institution is a prerequisite for consideration for admission to the Master of Music degree Program. Evidence of a degree recital in the senior year must be submitted in the form of a degree recital program or credit listed on the student’s transcript. Students holding a Bachelor of Arts degree must satisfy the requirement of the Peabody Bachelor of Music degree, demonstrated by examination or by completion of additional undergraduate courses. As a rule, an applicant must have achieved an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, exclusive of performance credits. Borderline cases will be reviewed by the Graduate Committee and/or the Dean.
Entrance/Placement examinations: All students entering the MM. program must take the complete music history, music theory and ear-training placement examinations. The exams include theory (written, aural and keyboard), twentieth century techniques, harmony, counterpoint, analysis, melodic and harmonic dictation, sight-singing four clefs (treble, alto, tenor, and bass), and music history (classical antiquity to present).
Review courses are provided to aid students in correcting deficiencies in the areas of music theory, ear-training, or music history.
Major Field Requirements: All students must pass a personal audition, interview, or examination in the major field. Tape recordings are only acceptable for international students who cannot audition in person.
Performance/Pedagogy: In addition to the normal audition material for the MM performance major, the applicant for the pedagogy emphasis will be scheduled an interview with the Pedagogy coordinator and other available pedagogy faculty. The interview will include a review of the applicant’s demonstrated interest and experience in teaching, and a discussion of professional and program goals.
The core curriculum consists of music bibliography, theory, and music history seminars (14 credits). The performance major consists of private instruction for a minimum of 1 year (8 credits) and a solo recital (2 credits).
Performance/Pedagogy candidates majoring on an string instrument must participate in the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Concert Orchestra, or Peabody Wind Ensemble during the each year of residency (minimum of 4 credits). In addition to the usual performance major requirements, the curriculum provides an emphasis in pedagogy which allows the student to develop his/her teaching skills through coursework, observation, and internship utilizing the combined resources of the Institute’s Conservatory and Preparatory faculties and programs (10 credits).
Individuals accepted into the MM with Pedagogy emphasis program will be assigned a three-person advisory committee. The members of the committee will provide feedback of progress and suggestions for improvement during the pedagogy internship (2nd year).
The development and presentation of a Portfolio is the final project requirement for a Master of Music with emphasis in Pedagogy. The content will include but will not be limited to: a complete series of lesson plans (1 year), videotape comprised of lessons effectively taught, a tape/evaluation of student recital, as well as critiques and letters of reference from those who have observed or been effected by the interns musical instruction.
The requirements are the same with the exception of the second year of ensemble requirement waived for Pedagogy students. The electives available to MM Performance students are chosen in a prescribed pattern and are relevant to Pedagogy so that the student develops an expertise in the art of teaching their instrument as well as playing it. The advantages include access to pedagogical mentors and a year of internship which are not available to students unless they have been accepted into the pedagogy program.
