Placement auditions for the Peabody Jazz Ensemble (PJE) are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, from 3:30-7:30 pm in the jazz studio on the 2nd floor of Austrian Hall. All new and returning jazz majors will be required to play an audition. Interested non-jazz majors will also be heard. Instrumentalists who are not jazz majors, especially saxophone, trumpet and trombone players, are encouraged to audition, and should contact Rich Lauver in the Ensemble Office to schedule an audition time. Auditioning students should arrive outside of the jazz studio at least 15 minutes prior to their scheduled audition time in order to fill out paperwork and have their photograph taken. Jazz majors should fill out the online Placement Audition Information Form so that we have correct contact information, and visit the audition check-in table in the grand arcade sometime between August 24-29 to have their photograph taken.
PJE will be the only jazz large ensemble this year. It will rehearse on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-3:20 pm, and will perform two concerts each semester.
Each auditioning student must demonstrate professionalism and a willingness to develop their skill as a musician to its fullest potential. Students must also display a practical knowledge of the technical aspects of his or her primary instrument, and when playing prepared pieces, solos, transcriptions and sight-reading materials, must exhibit fluency and melodic and rhythmic accuracy. The auditions are eight minutes in length, and consist of a prepared solo or technical study of the student’s own choosing (a bebop-related melody would be ideal), a sight reading skills assessment, and playing along with a backing CD.
